Awesome Birthday

My birthday was on Saturday, and I really had one of the most awesome days that I can remember.

First, an old friend invited me to a gentle bunch that he organised for his extended family and I thus got to spend some time, and share some cake, with my favourite kids in the whole world. Thanks dude and dudette, it was really great to spend some of the day with you.

From there, I progressed to the more organised drinks party at the Lagoon Beach Wang Thai restaurant. They did a great job of hosting us, even calling before hand to adjust the arrangements based on their first-hand knowledge of the weather at their breathtaking venue. Even a minor logistic problem as we stayed longer into the evening than they had anticipated was resolved quickly and quietly. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for all occasions.

I really appreciated all the friends that arrived. I’m used to Cape Town people treating any event that happens on a nice day as if it were a very loose and optional arrangement. I was humbled by the number of you that turned up. It was great to see all of you, and especially nice to see so many different groups of people I know mixing so well. Aside from the great, thoughtful presents, the convivial company that you guys provided was the coolest birthday gift one could hope for.

Special thanks to the Canadian delegation. It was wonderful to have you guys there. The young lady who turned up after going AWOL from my friendship circle for 18 months also put a smile on my face, and Indiana Jane and Kyknoord deserve a free plug for the blogs.

Lest anyone that reads this feels that they didn’t make the cut, let me explain that I organised very little. I returned from an unexpected trip to Johannesburg very shortly before my birthday and only had time to invite people by word of mouth. This makes the turnout all the more heartwarming. If you didn’t know about the event, it just means that my viral advertising didn’t reach you, and certainly not that I didn’t want you to come.

To the special friends that dragged me off to the Table View house party afterwards, affectionate thanks as always. I know I didn’t stay long, but your warm welcome of me and so many other people whom you had never met before speaks volumes about why you are my friends. I hear that you finished the night on a vigorously high note. :-)

I ended my day by taking my Southern Suburbs ladies to Pakalolo, the gateway to hell situated on the Table View beach front. We were welcomed graciously by the ever-gorgeous bar lady, and I was thrilled to be able to introduce some friends to the place that seems to be my local, for better or worse. I learned today that “Pakalolo” is an Hawaiian word for marijuana. While there was certainly none of that for us, I retied sober but relaxed after a most enjoyable day.

Finally, I have received good wishes from all over the country, and from Scotland, India, England, the USA, Ireland and Australia. I appreciate every one, although I have not even started to respond yet. You will each hear from me in the fullness of time, but know that my appreciation is deep. My friends certainly know how to make someone feel like a king for a day.

Police Brutality

April 26th, 2008 | by | old season

Almost two months ago, I posted an article about the totalitarian attitudes of airport security staff and how this boded badly for our freedoms.

Co-incidentally, on more or less the same day, the Stellebosch police performed a ham-handed raid on several student bars in the town. The scenes were captured on security videos and the images of police officers brutally storming into the bars, discharging their weapons and physically abusing the students are chilling. As usual, the storm has died down and this police operation appears to have gone completely unexplained, with nobody being called to account for it.

I would encourage you to watch the video here, and to keep this incident at the forefront of your thoughts, especially when dealing with the coppers. Remember, uniforms alone should not command respect.

However, an amazing personal drama played out during these raids, and it is this that I wish to draw your attention to today. I have painstakingly collected grainy screen shots of the event.

Our hero walks into the room, sipping his drink.

He doesn’t seem to notice the policeman with an assault rifle standing in the room.
Oh hello! What have we here?

Notice how, already, our hero draws his brandy and code toward himself protectively.
Now we see the stuff this man is made of. Casually holding his drink, he looks around the room while the police beat his friends savagely. He is the last man standing in the room.

Finally, a pig throws him to the ground savagely.

He observes some more, probably evaluating his options.

Gosh. Evaluation is thirsty work!

Thankfully, his drink is completely unaffected by the scuffle.
Mmmm! Delicious!

This man is a true Stellenbosch legend. Congratulations to you, Sir, for keeping your priorities in order in the face of authoritarian terrorism. If you read this, please leave a message. I’d feel privileged to interview you for this blog. If anybody can identify this hero, please put him in touch with me. Viva la revolucion!

Goth 2.0

Since arriving in Cape Town in late 2003, I’ve been on the lookout for a decent gothic nightclub in which to while away the night hours and indulge my darker tendencies*.

Honestly, the quest was quite depressing. I tried Mordor, which is more metal than goth and mostly sucks, as well as The One Ring, which is more lame than goth and mostly sucks. I had, for some time, been aware of the existence of a place called Gotham, but I was unable to locate it during two previous visits to Observatory.

Finally, last Friday night, I stumbled upon it after taking victuals at the nearby Mexican restaurant. It felt like I was going home. The place is magnificently decorated, while remaining run down and dingy, and I would recommend a visit to all who appreciate that sort of thing.

My visit, however, was not without some small personal trauma. I had to elbow my way past some very young looking goths and their girlfriends at the door. I overheard one of them say, “Chips, Dude, there is some old guy trying to come in.”

Kids today. Can’t take them anywhere.

*: I’ve been claiming to be black on government forms for quite a while now.

National Cleavage Day

Yesterday, Friday 30 March, was National Cleavage Day. I have no idea who declares these things, but I happened to be out at the Mexican Kitchen drinking some Tequila. Then some models showed up, and the Cleavage Cam* rode again…

*: All subjects posed voluntarily for photographs. Images have been cropped to protect the innocent. No animals were harmed during this photo shoot. All models were over the age of 18 at the time of the event. The Surgeon General has determined that drinking Tequila may be hazardous to your health.
